Preparing for an interview - Part II

In today's difficult job market, having a leg up on the competition can be key to securing employment. When you start your search you must keep in mind that perception is everything. Making a good first impression is crucial to boosting your perception as a viable applicant. Remember to dress for success (including polished shoes), be well groomed and do not wear perfume or cologne.

Few people would go into a situation blindly; applying for a job is no different. Be sure to do your homework on the company you're applying with and find out a few pieces of useful information about them. Visit the company's website, review their blog and read their press releases in an attempt to educate yourself.

Many job applicants are afraid to reference specific pieces of information from their own resume, assuming that the interviewer knows everything about them. Too often, these documents go unread or are simply scanned. Explain who you are and what your capabilities are. Give quantified examples of your past accomplishments.

Job descriptions can be stiff and inconsistent. Engage the interviewing personnel and ask them what kind of skills they are looking for in their future employee. Hear it firsthand from them and address their needs accordingly. This is also a good time to find out what the employer's expectations are for the position.
